Introduction
Known as the Chaparral in California, the Matorral in Chile, the Mallee in Australia, the Fynbos in South Africa and the Maqui in the Mediterranean Basin, these areas are collectively referred to as areas of Mediterranean Climate.
Chaparral biomes form in coastal areas where a cold ocean meets a landmass with high temperatures. Chaparral biomes are located 30 to 40 degrees above or below the equator and as such, have a tendency to fluctuate between being hot and dry and cool and wet.
